There are (according to Google Maps) 6 streets named Micklethwaite:
Micklethwaite Road, Fulham, London SW6 1QDView Larger Map Micklethwaite Road is in Fulham, south of Earl's Court and West of Brompton Cemetery, running ENE off Walham Grove then turning 90° to run NNW into Ongar Road. Below is a photograph of one of the houses on the road. According to the John Snow map of 1859, this area was not built on, so Micklethwaite Road is dated post 1859 On the Charles Booth's Poverty map of 1889 the site of the road is under the cricket pitch by the Smallpox Hospital. On the Bartholomew's Pocket Atlas and Guide to London of 1900 it is still not built. On the Baedeker Guide for 1909 the road appears to have been built but is not named. On the Bartholomew's map of 1940 the road is visible just west of the Western District Fever Hospital. An Estate Agent told me much of Fulham was built around the 1890s - he recommended Barbara Denny's Book "Fulham Past", but couldn't find an explicit reference to Micklethwaite Road in it whilst I was on the phone. This suggests a date of building between 1900 and 1909 - which is round about the time church architect John T Micklethwaite was buried in Westminster Abbey (1906). I suspect the road was named after him. Micklethwaite Road, Hall Green, Wakefield, Yorkshire WF4 3JXView Larger Map Micklethwaite Road, Hall Green, Wakefield is near Crigglestone, just off Junction 39 of the M1. Below is a photograph of one of the houses on the road. On the Boundary Commission map of 1885 the road is not visible. On the OS map of 1945 the road is visible. This map was published 1945 but last fully revised 1920 - this doesn't conclusdively date the road On the Land Utilisation map of 1938 the road is visible and marked as residential. So my guess is that the houses were built in the 1930s. An Estate Agent told be the houses are ex-Local Authority - perhaps one day I could ask the Council when they were built! I think it likely that the road is named after John Micklethwaite (1775-1854) who farmed Painthorpe Hall, or his son John Heaton Micklethwaite (1815-74) who was a vicar at nearby Chapelthorpe. Micklethwaite Road and Grove, Moorends, Thorne, Yorkshire DN8 4NSView Larger Map Micklethwaite Road is in Moorends, NNE of Thorne in Yorkshire, running East off Marshland Road as it heads North out of Thorne. Below is a photograph of one of the houses on the road. On the Land Utilisation map of 1940 the road is not visible but the land is marked as residential. The development hasn't yet begun. However on the Land Utilisation map of 1940 the road is visible. So were new houses built during WW2? Probably they date from just before the war. A helpful Estate Agent told me the houses were built to accommodate workers for Thorne Colliery so would be built late 1920s or 1930s as the pit became operational in 1926 (according to the Moorend site mentioned below). The pit was on land adjacent to Micklethwaite Farm. The Thorne Colliery Site says it was established in the 1930s. Micklethwaite Road is named after Micklethwaite farm, which is at the end of The Avenue, the next road north of Micklethwaite Road. - see Memories of Moorend. I have Joseph Micklethwaite of Gowdall (1850-1918) residing in 1911 at nearby Fox Gate Farm - I wonder if he built Micklethwaite Farm? Micklethwaite Road, Portsmouth, Scioto, OhioView Larger Map Micklethwaite Road runs East then South from close to the Southern Ohio Medical Center. It is named after the family of Scioto pioneer Joseph Micklethwaite/Mickelwait (1808-51), who emigrated to Portsmouth, Ohio from Great Heck in Yorkshire in 1831 and whose descendants were prominent in Portsmouth. Micklethwaite Lane, Bingley, YorkshireView Larger Map Micklethwaite Lane runs up to the village of Micklethwaite from Bingley. Micklethwaite Grove, Wetherby, YorkshireView Larger Map There are several roads named Micklethwaite in a new development just south of the River Wharfe close to Wetherby town centre. This is the other side of the A1 motorway from Wetherby Grange. Micklethwaite Drive, Queensbury, YorkshireView Larger Map Micklethwaite Drive is in a development to the south of the famous Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury. I wrote "It's proximity to Bradford suggest it is named after the village of Micklethwaite". That just goes to show I shouldn't assume. Graham Smith sent me the cutting from the Telegraph & Argus below showing it was named after his much respected Uncle, Charles Henry Micklethwaite Smith. |
