Micklethwaites have emigrated to many parts of the world. USAJohn (1759 Darfield JM135), a merchant, descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), is recorded on the 1790 US census in Philadelphia although he died back in Barnsley. Willoughby (1787 Kellington JM636), a descendant of Richard (1604 Cawthorne JM1025), and his wife Susannah emigrated in 1831 and the family settled in Ohio. His nephew Joseph (1808 Snaith JM642) went with them. Some of the family did well in the Gold Rush. Alfred Lockwood (1837 Thornhill m1131), a descendant of Jonas (1725 Mirfield J1), his wife Ann and his brother Walter Joseph (1839 Thornhill m2201) emigrated to Maryland between 1865 and 1870, some descendants later moving to Ohio. Joseph (1828 Conisborough m5268), a descendant of John (1693 Denby m2600), emigrated to Utah in 1869 with his wife and son. Some descendants moved to California, others to New Jersey. Louisa nee Smith (1849 Plymouth m1598), widow of John (1847 Bradfield m1597) who was a descendant of Josias (1719 Silkstone m5590), emigrated to Detroit with her son and daughters in 1911. Thomas Charles (1876 York JM184G), descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), emigrated in 1917 with his wife and family to the Pacific NorthWest. CanadaFrank William (1849 m4413 Ashton under Lyme), a descendant of Josias (1656 Penistone m3675), emigrated to Toronto in the 1870s with his wife and family, from Ireland where his father (also a photographer) had moved to. He became famous for his photographs of early Canadian life - see the photo gallery. Descendant still live in the Toronto area. George W (1937 Doncaster JM6376), a descendant of Jonathan (1660 Hemsworth JM600), emigrated in 1964 with his family. My first cousin 3 times removed, Hetty Ann (1865 Huddersfield m7237), descendant of John (1805 Huddersfield a1), emigrated in 1906 to Kasack Saskatchewan with her second husband William Henry Bamforth and their son and remarried in 1926 in Orillia Ontario. Several other living (so details withheld) Micklethwaites have also emigrated there in the last few decades. Stafford Northcote (1877 Denby m1678), descendant of John (1729 Silkstone m5793),emigrated with his family to New South Wales, Australia in the early part of the 20th century - descendants remain there. Edward Micklethwait (1820 High Hoyland JM558), descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), emigrated to Australia, left family there, and returned to England via Canada. Richard S Micklethwait (JM571B 1866 Ackworth), descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), emigrated to NSW and served with Australian forces in WW1 but died without issue. John Micklethwait (JM135L 1846 Barnsley), descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 from where his family moved to Australia - descendants remain there. John Raymond (1899 Yorkshire JM232), descendant of Richard (1490 Ingbirchworth JM1), emigrated to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). The BahamasRichard, son of Christopher and Jane, died 1802, was a plantation owner on Eleuthera. Families in the islands still bear the name (usually as Micklewhite) reflecting the fact that slaves were given the name of their owner. Richard's ancestry has not yet been ascertained. Descendants live in Germany and Canada IndiaLydia (1845 Thorne JM4701), descendant of Richard (1604 Cawthorne JM1025), married William Sanderson in Lahore, India in 1864. More recentlyThe name has spread in the 20th century from England into other parts of the UK, reflecting increased social mobility.
