The Name, The Places, The Branches | |
|
These folks listed below are the heads of branches - they have, by my definition, got at least grandchildren. ID numbers (in brackets) should not be relied on as they are subject to change when new discoveries are made but are included to make cross-referencing easier. Families and individuals who are not part of a 3 generation branch are not described here. The number of members of a branch is an approximate count of those bearing the name - it is just a guide to the size of the branch. Page numbers (eg. p1.2) refer to the old tree drawing. An asterisk * indicates a branch detailed on John Micklethwait's site. The chart differs from many charts in that all the daughters of a couple and all the sons who had no children of their own are grouped together in one column. This is done to save space - otherwise these charts would be very wide. Summary
Richard Micklethwait (1490) Ingbirchworth (JM1)This is the main Micklethwait branch, originating in Ingbirchworth. Richard died in about 1546. John Micklethwait and his father have extensively researched this branch (see his web site) documenting it as tree 1. Due to the different data we've collected, there may be some folks missing from his tree that are on mine, and some missing on mine that are on his. We're working on it! This branch initially resided in Cawthorne and Ingbirchworth, followed by Swine in Holderness then Ardsley from where they moved all over England (and just into Wales). John Micklethwait of Ardsley (JM135 born Darfield 1759) appears to have been the first emigrant to the US appearing in Philadelphia in 1790. In the 1920s Thomas Charles Micklethwait (JM184G 1876 York) went to Seattle. There are many descendants of this branch in the UK (including the editor of the Economist) and also in Australia - Edward Micklethwait (JM558 1820 High Hoyland) emigrated to Australia, left family there, and returned to England via Canada. Richard S Micklethwait (JM571B 1866 Ackworth) emigrated to NSW and served with Australian forces in WW1 but died without issue. John Micklethwait (JM135L 1846 Barnsley) emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 from where his family moved to Australia. There are also many distinguished members, the most notable is Joseph Viscount Micklethwait JM113 1680-1733 of Swine Co. York, created Baron Micklethwait of Portarlington on 7th August 1724 and then Viscount Micklethwait of Longford in Ireland 30th May 1727. Others have served with considerable distinction in HM forces. James Micklethwait (1509) Worsboro (JM405)This is another branch John Micklethwait has researched (his tree 2). There appear to be close connections with Richard (JM1) above but so far proving them has not been possible. Despite branches reaching Norfolk, Sussex, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, the line has died out. There are no known emigrants. Sir John Micklethwait (JM470 1612-1682 born Bishop Burton Yorkshire) was "Physician-in-Ordinary" to King Charles II. Sir Sotherton Branthwayt Peckham Micklethwait Bart. (JM883 1786-1853 born Norfolk) was created a Baronet by Queen Victoria for rescuing her when her horses bolted. Richard Micklethwait (1604) Cawthorne (JM1025)See John's tree 4. Willoughby Micklethwaite emigrated to the US in 1831 with his nephew John and many other family members. There are several notable US members, including Major General Claude B Mickelwait (JM747 1895 Iowa) Many descendants both in the UK and in the US where the name Mickelwait is more generally used, and in Canada where George W Micklethwaite (JM6376 1937 Doncaster) emigrated in 1964 with his family. DNA tests suggest a link with Richard (JM1 1490) but documentary evidence for this has so far escaped us. Maria Micklethwaite (1629) Penistone (m5646)Spread around the Huddersfield-Barnsley region, but the number of current male descendants is very small. This branch was the recipient of the former branch of m5631 John of Penistone (abt 1658) - see Issue 8 of the Newsletter. Josias Micklethwaite (1656) Penistone (m3675)Numerous descendants in the UK and Canada, several branches "emigrated" from Yorkshire to Ashton-u-Lyne, from where F W Micklethwaite (m4413 1849 Ashton) emigrated to Canada and famously (in Canada) photographed early Canadian life - his descendants still live there. Urban Micklethwaite (m2814 Colchester) emigrated to New Zealand but returned after serving with their forces. William Micklethwaite (1665) Penistone (m5577)Rapidly died out. Daniel Micklethwaite (1681) Kirkheaton (P1)John's tree 3. Mainly in the Mirfield-Wakefield area. John Thomas(P26 Wakefield 1843-1906) was a church architect and is buried in Westminster Abbey. The last male of the branch Daniel Marriott Micklethwaite (P21J Harrogate 1897) died in 1962. Benjamin Micklethwaite (P10A Elland 1761) was hanged in York for burglary in 1817 Samuel Micklethwait (1689) Penistone (m2598)Resided around the Huddersfield area in the main, and still there. John Micklethwaite (1693) Denby (m2600)Many descendants in the Barnsley area, and a few in London, and one in Aus and one in Canada (both with daughters only). Joseph (m5268 1828 Conisborough) emigrated to Utah in 1869 - some descendants are in New Jersey. Elias Micklethwaite (1703) Mirfield (E1)Quite a few descendants across south and west Yorkshire Joseph Micklethwaite (1716) Sheffield (m9277)Don't know where he came from, but the line didn't last. Josias Micklethwait (1719) Silkstone (m5590)Many descendants in South Yorkshire, Tameside, Australia and a few in Germany, from where one has gone on to Canada. Louise (nee Smith) widow of John (m1597 1847 Bradfield) took family to Detroit in 1910s. Joel Micklethwaite (B33 1878 Bradfield) emigrated with his family to Australia - descendants remain there. John Mickelthwate (m5220) emigrated to Germany in the 1840s - a descendant is recorded among the German war dead in WW1. Jonas Micklethwait (1725) Mirfield (J1)Another branch with many descendants in Barnsley, and others in other parts of Yorkshire. A branch emigrated to the US in the 1860s (Walter J m2201 1839 Thornhill and Alfred m1131 1837 Thornhill), another to South Africa (Jonny m1628 1870 Rastrick) but they have living descendants both in South Africa and the UK. Christopher Micklethwaite (1726) Bahamas (m9711)Nothing is known about where this Christopher came from but there are suggestions that the famiy came from Penistone. His son Richard died in the Bahamas in 1801. His slaves have continued the name as Micklewhite to the present day. Richard Michaelthwaite (1727) Fishlake Yorkshire (m5861)Around Fishlake - appears to have died out Jonathan Micklethwaite (1729) Campsall (m5934)This branch seems to have had the travel bug, eg. William Sykes Micklethwaite and his father were Methodist ministers and missionaries, but there aren't many male descendants left. John Micklethwaite (1729) Silkstone (m5793)Many daughters in this line rapidly left no male descendants on the main branch, but an illegitimate branch has many descendants around Barnsley and Rotherham. Stafford Northcote Micklethwaite emigrated to Australia - descendants are still there. George Michaelwaite (1746) Winterton Lincoln (m2368)Descendants mainly around Croydon having got there via Hull. See feature on The Michaelwaite Branch George Micklethwaite (1749) Emley (m3131)Descendants in West Yorkshire and beyond Nancy Micklethwaite (1759) Mirfield (m5626)Descendants in West Yorkshire. Joseph Mickelwait (1771) London (m5604)Ancestor of Sir Michael Caine and others in the London area.
