Micklethwaites - Data |

The Name, The Places, The Branches | |

I started what has become this One Name Study in an attempt to find my 3x great grandfather John Micklethwaite born 1805 (and I still havent found his parents!). I started by collecting all the information I could find on the Micklethwaites in their Kirklees strongholds - Mirfield, Kirkheaton and Kirkburton - from the censuses, IGI batches, and any personal readings of the parish records. Inevitably as the data collection has grown, the area of interest has expanded, most notably towards Wakefield, as well as towards the "ancestral home" of the Micklethwaites in Cawthorne and Ingbirchworth, and then outwards covering all England, and eventually, the world! John Micklethwait's site covers the Micklethwait branches and has pictures of various places of note in Cawthorne, Ingbirchworth, Hopton and other places. Each Micklethwaite (or variant) on whom I have data is listed, in alphabetic order of christian name, then in date order. This means it is easy to compare all the Johns, but not so easy to compare Ben, Benjamin, Benj, etc (and Elizabeths are even worse) but by using 2 windows I think it would be possible. If you are wanting to find someone, don't forget the browser 'find' facility. Links are blue and underlined (by default) - and should take you to that person. Note that ID numbers prefixed 'JM' refer to people who are also on John's site. Marriages are from the data collected on marriages; spouses are gathered from the index; so if I haven't got a marriage for a spouse, they will appear under spouses rather than marriages. The ID numbers may change as records are merged (when they are the same person) or demerged (when I got it wrong!) Please note that whilst there is sound data behind this site, some of the linkages are based on conjecture and guesswork. If you think I am wrong, please do get in touch. The date in brackets after the name is only an approximate date of birth - it may be based on a census age, or an average age of marriage! I keep finding mistakes - please let me know when you find some. I have now created trees for each of the major branches - view them through the main site - there are indices there. If you find yourself at the top of the page after clicking on a link, that person isn't listed - if you think they should be, let me know, but sometimes the system gets confused looking for Hannah when they are listed as Ann. Note also that single mothers are usually labelled 'father'! I should add a note on the variations of the name Micklethwaite. Obvious ones are with/without the final 'e', and confusion over the 'th' sound. But Ancestry census transcriptions have taken variations to places I never dreamed of - Micksellow, Michlthwark, Makeltherde, Sucklethawaite, etc. And are names such as Micklewhite and Micklewright variations - I don't know! You are welcome to consult the database, and take out personal information, but please don't take out data 'en-masse' without permission.
