According to Stephen Archer's Surname Atlas, the distribution map of the Cordingley name on the 1881 UK census shows that it is most frequent in the textile areas of West Yorkshire (Bradford and Dewsbury) and, to a lesser extent, South East Lancashire and Cheshire.
As yet, I don't know the origin of the name, having only recently found a link - if you do, please let me know!
I have extracted the data from the Birstall batches (C/M108111-3) on the IGI into 2 spreadsheet files: baptisms and marriages. I have also been sent a copy of the will of Jennet Cordingley from 1558? (see page1 and page2) and a transcription of some Cordingley burials in Birstall. I hope these are of some help.
