Micklethwaites - The Branches |

The Name, The Places, The Branches | |

I have traced my branch back as far as John Micklethwaite - he married Hannah Mitchell at Almondbury in 1827 when they were both described as being "of Crosland of this parish". John died in 1849 in the cholera outbreak which swept the insanitary conditions in Johnny Moore's Hill (in Paddock, Huddersfield) where they lived. He was said to be 44 at his death. The problem is that I don't know where he was born as he died before the 1851 census. So I started collecting Micklethwaites to see if I could find him. Out of this came the 5 possibilities below:
I have had my DNA tested - so far however this has shed no light on my tree. As I collected Micklethwaites, I also collected variants of the name - at the last count I had over 250. The main ones are Micklethwaite and Micklethwait. There are then many minor mis-spellings of those two. However, transcriptions, such as Ancestry, add many unlikely ones, such as Sucklethnary and Makeltherde. Additionally, there are other established surnames to consider, such as Micklewright, Micklefield, Mickleborough, Michaelwaite and Micklewhite (and their variants of course). Micklewright, Micklefield and Mickleborough I believe are largely unrelated, except where the name has been used instead of Micklethwaite. I have traced Michaelwaite and Micklewhite, the former from Lincolnshire, the latter in London - Sir Michael Caine is a member of this branch which appears to be derived from a Mickelthwaite, but not a lot of people know that! (See also articles on my Features page). There is another Micklewhite branch - in the Bahamas, descended from slaves once owned by Richard Micklethwaite who died in 1802. Whilst we know his parents' names, we don't know where they came from.
